TDEE for women

Most adult women land between 1,600 and 2,400 kcal/day at moderate activity. But TDEE is not one fixed number across your life — hormones, pregnancy, and age move it.

Typical TDEE ranges for women

ProfileTypical daily burn (kcal)
Sedentary, small frame1,500–1,800
Lightly active, average size1,800–2,100
Moderately active, average size2,000–2,400
Very active or taller/heavier2,400–3,000+

How life stages change your TDEE

Menstrual cycle

Resting energy expenditure can run roughly 100–300 kcal/day higher during the luteal phase. Do not panic at mid-cycle stalls; treat the calendar, not the scale, as the noise source.

Pregnancy

Do not cut calories while pregnant. Pregnancy adds roughly +340 kcal/day in the second trimester and about +450 kcal/day in the third (pre-pregnancy weight basis). Always follow your healthcare provider's advice.

Breastfeeding

Milk production typically costs about 300–400 kcal/day. Most guidance suggests eating to hunger at roughly maintenance + 300–500 kcal; deficits often reduce supply and slow recovery.

Perimenopause and menopause

NEAT and lean mass both tend to fall, so maintenance can drop 100–200 kcal/day from age 40 to 60. Recalculate every 6–8 weeks and keep resistance training for muscle.

PCOS

Insulin resistance does not necessarily change TDEE much, but plateaus are common and hunger signals noisier. High protein, fiber, and strength training help adherence more than steeper deficits do.

Thyroid conditions

Untreated hypothyroidism can lower BMR several hundred kcal/day; hyperthyroidism raises it. If tests are pending, use the calculator as a baseline and adjust on real weight change.

The practical rules

  • Set your base target with the TDEE calculator honestly.
  • Judge progress on the seven-day average, and ignore cycle-week noise.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding? Use maintenance or a small surplus under medical guidance.
  • Recalculate after any big life-stage change (postpartum, menopause, medication changes).

Frequently asked questions

Should women use a different formula than men?

The same formulas apply, but with the sex-specific constant: −161 for women versus +5 for men in Mifflin-St Jeor. Life stages add adjustments on top, as covered above.

Why am I gaining during my luteal phase?

Mostly water and glycogen plus a small rise in resting energy expenditure. Use your follicular-phase average to judge actual fat change.

How many calories should I eat while breastfeeding?

A common starting point is your TDEE plus ~300–500 kcal/day, eating to hunger. Confirm with your healthcare provider.
